Opportunity Partnership (OPT-IN)

Burke County, N.C. – The Opportunity Internship (OPT-IN) program is an 8-week exploratory initiative tailored for recently graduated high school seniors in Burke County, North Carolina. Launching each June, the program integrates three core components: work experience, mentorship, and professional development.

Program Structure

Participants engage in hands-on work experiences with local employers, gaining practical skills in various industries. Each intern is paired with a mentor who provides guidance, support, and insights into career pathways. Additionally, the program offers professional development sessions aimed at equipping interns with essential soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Collaborative Partnerships

OPT-IN is a collaborative effort between Burke Development Inc. and The Industrial Commons, with support from Burke County Public Schools and Western Piedmont Community College. This partnership aims to increase post-secondary credential attainment and establish local workforce connections by providing mentorship and education about skilled pathways to gainful employment for students and individuals in Burke County.

Success Stories

A notable success story from the program is that of Chris, a 2022 graduate from Draughn High School. Through OPT-IN, Chris interned with Meridian Specialty Yarn Group and, upon successful completion, was offered a full-time position as a machine operator. His dedication enabled him to achieve personal milestones, such as purchasing his own cell phone and car.
